SUMMARY:Winter Warblers
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting Program via Zoom\nSpeaker:  CODY KENT\, Assistant Professor of Quantitative Vertebrate Biology\, Frostburg State University \nNew World warbler beauty and diversity has long fascinated birders and scientists. Their spring arrival begins the height of bird activity across most of North America. But much of their time is spent wintering in southern latitudes\, particularly in the Caribbean where concentrated warbler diversity reaches its zenith. Research over the last two decades has shed more light on the importance of wintering conditions for their survival and nesting success. Dr. Kent will discuss our current understanding of warbler population biology in the Caribbean including foraging behavior\, distribution and interactions with other species. Dr. Kent completed a Ph.D. at Tulane University where he began research on wintering Caribbean warblers.  His current research includes examining how small-scale land management actions impact bird diversity within Washington DC and large-scale studies of how human activities impact niche diversity in warblers across the United States. \nZoom in and join us online. The presentation is free and open to all. To receive the link to join\, you must sign up for our Osprey newsletter using the form at the bottom of this web page. We will email the link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Tiger Salamander Restoration in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting Program via Zoom\, Saving the Salamanders\nSpeaker: KEVIN STOHLGREN\, Regional Heritage Program biologist for the Maryland\nDepartment of Natural Resources (MD DNR) – Note:  speaker change from Ms. Schlimm.\n\n\nThe MD DNR has been working for years to reverse the decline of tiger salamanders\, which can grow to over a foot in length in Delmarva wetlands. Beth will discuss how wetland biologists have helped restore numerous Delmarva bays by returning hydrology and vegetation to natural conditions favorable to increasing tiger salamander breeding. Although still endangered in Maryland\, these efforts are bearing fruit with an increase in salamander populations over the past few years. Beth has worked for MD DNR since 2016. She is a conservation specialist whose primary responsibilities include monitoring and habitat restoration efforts for rare\, threatened and endangered reptiles and amphibians.\nZoom in and join us online. The presentation is free and open to all. To receive the link to join\, you must sign up for our Osprey newsletter using the form at the bottom of this web page. We will email the link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Think Like a Raven: Monthly Meeting Zoom Talk
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, Feb. 7\, 2024. 7-8 p.m. ZOOM \nCommon Ravens were identified as a breeding species for the first time ever in Charles County last year and sightings are becoming more frequent. Dr. John Marsluff\, a professor at the University of Washington College of the Environment and a top authority on Ravens\, will discuss his fascinating research in Yellowstone Park. His work provides insight on what we can expect from Ravens as they expand their range in Southern Maryland.\nDr. Marsluff studies the impact of habitat change\, fragmentation and increased urbanization on birds. He focuses primarily on corvids\, but has worked with falcons and hawks throughout the world. He is the author of several science books about crows\, including his most recent “Gifts of the Crow.” He has been awarded the HR Peyton award from the Cooper Ornithological Society as well as the the Washington state book award for general non-fiction. \nTo receive the link for this free talk sign up for our “Osprey” newsletter on the homepage of our website at www.somdaudubon.org. SUMMARY:Safe Skies-How we can protect birds from window collisions: Monthly Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:March 6\, 2024. 7-8 p.m. Zoom. \nAn estimated 1 billion birds die every year in window collisions. Safe Skies Maryland was created to empower citizens to learn more about this major threat to birds and how to prevent it. Dr. Mark Southerland\, director of Safe Skies Maryland\, will provide solutions for how you can stop bird collisions with your home windows\, as well as how you can get involved in community efforts to equip public buildings with bird-safe windows.\nDr. Southerland earned a PhD in ecology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and works as an environmental consultant supporting the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. He also leads the legislative program of Safe Skies Maryland campaign for bird safe buildings laws at county\, city and state levels.\nTo receive the Zoom link for our talk\, sign up for our “Osprey” newsletter on our homepage at www.somdaudubon.org.

SUMMARY:Chapman Forest:  Forest Ecology\, Spring Bird\, and Ephemeral Plant Walk and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip: Talk & Walk  (11 am to 1 pm)\nLeader: Lynne Wheeler \nJoin us at historic Mount Aventine situated within Chapman State Park\, a 2200-acre forest. This is a joint event hosted by our new local chapter Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay\, a national non-profit focusing on incorporating native plants into our landscape\, presented by Lynne\, Membership Chair for Southern Maryland Audubon Society and Wild Ones Chesapeake Bay. The event starts with a 40-minute talk at the historic Mount Aventine\, an 1840 antebellum home\, about the unique forest ecology of Chapman Forest. Come and learn about how native plant communities are a direct result of their ecology. As they say: location\, location\, location. The combination of deep ravines\, calcareous soils\, and close proximity to the Potomac River has produced a remarkable flora predominately composed of species typical of the inner piedmont and carbonate areas of the Appalachians that are otherwise are to absent on the Coastal Plain\, especially in association. Chapman Forest is considered to be Maryland’s largest and finest example of this natural community type. It is also designated as an Important Bird Area by Audubon. After the presentation we will take a 60 – 90-minute walk into the forest looking for spring ephemeral plants and birds. \nRSVP required. Space limited to 15. \nRSVP at Signup Genius or to Lynne at somdaudubon@yahoo.com or text to 301-751-8097.
