SUMMARY:Behind the Scenes in Wildlife Photography
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting via Zoom\nSpeaker: Dean Newman\, SMAS director\, local conservationist\, photographer \nDean Newman will describe what can happen behind the scenes when shooting wildlife images. Photographing wildlife sounds romantic but can come with a dose of hazardous duty from jungle bites\, stings\, jabs\, and rashes to arctic frostbite\, hostile wildlife\, and acrobatic stakeouts. Join us as Dean shares his experiences where interacting with wildlife and editors have pushed him to the very brink of endurance\, health\, and sanity. Dean and his wife Sandy live in St. Mary’s County. He is now retired after 29 years in the Navy and is an avid supporter of conserving wildlife habitat. \nZoom in and join us online. The presentation is free and open to all. To receive the link to join this lecture you must sign up for our Osprey newsletter. See the sign-up form at the bottom of this web page. We will email the link to join the lecture several days prior to and the same day of the lecture.

SUMMARY:The Bird-Insect Food Web
DESCRIPTION:Bluebird with a tasty snack! \nMonthly Meeting via Zoom\nSpeaker: Ashley Kennedy\, Ph.D.\, BCE. Entomologist\, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control \nNumerous studies from around the world suggest that insect populations are currently in decline\, which in turn affects birds who rely on insects for food. To determine which insects are most important in bird diets we formed a community science project across North America which provided crowd-sourced pictures of birds with their arthropod prey. Based on more than 8\,000 photos of Delaware bluebirds\, and more than 7\,000 photos of other species\, we gained insight about the food web that connect plants\, insects\, and birds and what we can do in our own yards to make a difference. \nZoom in and join us online. The presentation is free and open to all. To receive the link to join\, you must sign up for our Osprey newsletter using the form at the bottom of this web page. We will email the link prior to the event.

SUMMARY:The Mysteries and Marvels of Bird Migration
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting via Zoom\nSpeaker: Chris Eberly\, Director of Programs\, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake \nImagine flying 3\,000 miles with no rest\, no refueling\, and no water. Oh\, and by the way\, you weigh half an ounce and do this in 80 non-stop hours.  The Blackpoll Warbler does this (plus an additional 4\,500 miles) during its migration every fall. Swainson’s Hawks travel 7\,000 miles and switch from eating ground squirrels in the American West to grasshoppers in Argentina. \nChris Eberly\, formerly executive director of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership\, is one of the state’s leading authorities on bird migration. He  will explore amazing migrations\, from raptors to shorebirds to songbirds and demonstrate how technology is helping scientists unravel the complexities of bird migration. GPS\, light-level geolocators\, weather surveillance radar\, and nanotags are unlocking these long-held secrets. \nZoom in and join us online. The presentation is free and open to all. To receive the link to join\, you must sign up for our Osprey newsletter using the form at the bottom of this web page. We will email the link prior to the event. \nThis lecture can qualify for Master Naturalist continuing education.

SUMMARY:Celebrate the Return of the Prothonotary Warbler
DESCRIPTION:Field Trip\nLeader: Gene Groshon \nVisit this unique swampland where one of Southern Maryland’s most eye-popping warblers makes its home. The Prothonotary Warbler will be in full song\, setting up its breeding territories. Our leader has been banding Prothonotaries in this location for several years. Our goal will be to identify individual warblers that have just returned from Venezuela\, Colombia or Mexico to the Cypress Swamp to nest again. The Sanctuary includes a boardwalk through the swamp\, so the birding should be excellent at the height of spring migration. \nDIRECTIONS: About 2 mi south of Prince Frederick\, MD on Rt 4\, turn south on Sixes Road (Rt 506). In 2 miles turn left on Grays Road. Proceed for about a quarter mile to Sanctuary entrance on the right. Register online\, below\, or on our website. https://www.calvertparks.org/event-5139372

SUMMARY:Sotterley Presents: Saving Grassland Birds in Sotterley's Hayfields
DESCRIPTION:Presentation (In Person)\nSpeaker: DAVID MOULTON\, founder of Saving Southern Maryland’s Grassland Birds \nDavid will discuss the role Historic Sotterley has played in finding ways to bale hay while trying not to harm baby birds at the\nsame time. Some of our most beloved species of grassland birds\, such as the Eastern Meadowlark\, nest only in large hay fields during May and June – often conflicting directly with the spring hay harvest. What can be done? With Sotterley’s property manager\, Joe Goldsmith\, David has undertaken a series of experiments to demonstrate that by altering harvest techniques\, timing and patterns\, Southern Maryland hay farmers can often maintain their haying operations while significantly increasing the reproductive success of the birds. He will outline their findings and share ideas about maintaining our agricultural heritage and conserving our threatened wildlife. \nThis event will be in-person only.
