SUMMARY:The Secret Life of Cardinals
DESCRIPTION:Portrait of male Northern Cardinal by Dr. Jodie Jawor \nThe Northern Cardinal is one of our most recognizable and charismatic birds. Even John James Audubon praised it\, writing\, “In richness of plumage\, elegance of motion\, and strength of song\, this species surpasses all its kindred.” In this Zoom program\, Dr. Jodie Jawor will talk about the ecology and behavior of cardinals\, drawing on her many years of studying them. \nJodie M. Jawor earned her Ph.D. in biology from the University of Dayton. She has worked with Northern Cardinals at various locations across the eastern United States. She has also worked with Pyrrhuloxia\, a close relative of cardinals\, in New Mexico. \nInstead of in-person meetings\, SMAS is hosting virtual lectures using Zoom. We will send invitations via email with a link for joining each online event. If you do not get our Osprey newsletter via email\, you need to sign up first. SUMMARY:Restoring Common Terms & Black Skimmers in Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Common Tern family by Nick Palmieri \nJoin us for a fascinating discussion about Common Terns and Black Skimmers\,  two species endangered in the state of Maryland. Among many threats\, the sandy islands they need for nesting are eroding due to sea-level rise. Our speaker\, David Curson\, will introduce a new project that provides artificial nesting sites for colonies of these beach-nesting seabirds. \nSince 2004 David has worked as Director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Maryland-DC\, and in 2018 he also became Interim Executive Director. He has MS and PhD degrees in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  \nInstead of in-person meetings\, SMAS is hosting virtual lectures using Zoom. We will send invitations via email with a link for joining each online event. If you do not get our Osprey newsletter via email\, you need to sign up first. SUMMARY:Climate Change in Autumn: Fruit Availability for Migrant Birds
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Amanda Gallinat is an ecologist who studies how environmental change affects plants\, birds\, and their interactions. Her recent research focuses on the effects of climate change on the timing of seasonal biological events in the northeast\, including fruit ripening and bird migration\, and how these climate-driven changes alter food availability for birds in autumn. \nAmanda’s research incorporates the historical field notes of Henry David Thoreau\, long-term bird banding records\, museum specimens\, and field observations\, and her work has been featured by National Audubon Society\, the Wildlife Society\, and American Scientist. Amanda has a B.A. from Carleton College and a PhD from Boston University\, and she is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at Utah State University. \nInstead of in-person meetings\, SMAS is hosting virtual lectures using Zoom. We will send invitations via email with a link for joining each online event. If you do not get our Osprey newsletter via email\, you need to sign up first. Learn what is being done\, and what you can do\, to help them. \nMike is a naturalist and co-chairman of Cobb Island’s annual Monarch Mania butterfly festival. He has been tagging Monarchs as part of a community science project during the fall migration for more than ten years. \nInstead of in-person meetings this fall\, Southern Maryland Audubon Society is hosting virtual lectures using Zoom.
