DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting Zoom talk\nAuthor and wildlife photographer Scott Harris takes us on his journey find all 53 raptors that call the Lower 48 states home. It took 17 months and more than 100\,000 miles across 34 states\, but Harris found them all and chronicled his adventures and misadventures in a book\, “Raptor Quest: Chasing America’s Raptors.” He shares his tales with us\, along with what he learned about these amazing birds and the people he met along the way. \nIf you are not already on our “Osprey” newsletter list\, you can sign up at the bottom of our home page www.somdaudubon.org and we will send you the Zoom link prior to the talk. \nTalk may qualify for continuing education hours for Master Naturalists.

DESCRIPTION:FIELD TRIP\n\n\n\nLeader: Lynne Wheeler\n\nJoin Lynne at the Port Tobacco River Park pavilion and learn how to identify birds and count them! This trip will prepare you to participate in upcoming Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) in December. We need your help! Multiple Christmas Bird Counts are held December 14 – January 5 throughout Southern Maryland in Charles\, Calvert\, and St. Mary’s County. This is an opportunity to learn how it is done\, as well as how to use the MERLIN bird I.D. smart phone app. We will have a 30-minute discussion at the pavilion\, followed by a bird walk in the park.\n​\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBinoculars and/or camera and the MERLIN bird smart phone app is recommended.\nMaximum participants 12.\nRSVP to Lynne Signup Genius\, somdaudubon@yahoo.com\, or 301-751-8097 (text only).

DESCRIPTION:In-Person Presentation at Lexington Park Library\nSpeaker:  Dr. Mark Southerland \nAn estimated one billion birds die every year to collisions with windows – but what can we do about it?\nJoin Safe Skies Maryland\, an initiative of the Maryland Ornithological Society supported by Southern Maryland Audubon to\nlearn the high price birds pay for co-existing with humans and how it is our responsibility to make a change.\n\nThis event will include an educational session on how to make all types of windows safer for birds and a workshop to learn how to start the bird-proofing process at home! One window of the Lexington Park Library will become a Learning Center to educate our customers on one of the many options available to help our birds.\n\nNote:  This event is for adults. We will meet in Rooms A&B of the library.\n\n\n\nRegister at St. Mary’s Library website to receive a reminder email but walk-ins are welcome.
