Migration on the Indian Head Rail Trail

September 19 @ 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Trip Leaders: Lynne Wheeler, Pam Brumbley

Look for fall warblers and migrating birds on a paved trail covering easy terrain. This hike provides a unique opportunity to view undeveloped natural areas of forest, wetlands, and the Mattawoman Creek. Originally built in 1918 as a supply route for the Navy’s Indian Head Powder Factory, this elevated rail bed passes through the Mattawoman Creek stream valley and is an eBird Hot Spot with 151 species year to date. It has been many years since SMAS has offered a field trip here, and we are excited to provide this opportunity again. Maximum number of participants is 15. RSVP to Lynne at somdaudubon@yahoo.com  or text 301-751-8097.
